Children’s Jaw And Teeth Development

Dr. Mele has hundreds of hours of training in growth and development of the jaws and teeth.

Children exams include the evaluation of the jaw size in relationship to tooth size and the relationship between one jaw to the other jaw (Do the jaws fit together properly?) When discrepancies occur, interceptive functional treatments with comfortable, colorful appliances that the children love to show to their friends, are implemented at an early age (6 years to 11 years). The jaw can be stimulated to grow to allow for the space needed for their permanent adult teeth to come in, thus preventing crowding and eliminating or reducing the time and expense of braces.

Other important benefits to early treatment are:

  • To open all sinus cavities allowing air to be filtered. Sinuses have hairlike filters that remove particulate matter from the air reducing pathogens and allergens that enter the body. Mouth breathing cannot filter the air therefore breathing through the mouth can allow pathogens and allergies to enter the body. By opening sinus passages sore throat, ear infections, and colds can be reduced.
  • Facial growth is stimulated creating a more attractive face
  • TMJ dysfunction can be prevented at an early age
  • The head can be better balanced on the spine preventing postural issues with spine curvature and shoulder and hip unevenness.
  • Improves the flow of cerebral spinal fluid
  • Increases muscle strength throughout the body
  • Can stop sleep apnea and snoring
  • Stops bruxism (teeth grinding)
